However, you’ve got to eat the sugar a certain way in order for it to be effective treatment for getting rid of hiccups. Just place the tablespoon of sugar right on the back of your tongue and let it sit there for a few minutes. If you can’t stomach that much sugar for that amount of time, then you might also try peanut butter, honey, or another food that will stick to your tongue.
Hiccups are not usually a cause for concern, and some people have actually had the hiccups for years with little or no side effects. The Guinness Book of World Records lists Charles Osborne as having the longest attack of hiccups. He had them for 68 years! In rare cases however, hiccups can be an indication of a serious problem. Occasionally, hiccups are the first symptom of one of a few diseases that can be fatal. If you have the hiccups for an abnormally long period of time, it’s always best to get them checked out.
