Chestnuts are delicious and often found in Asian food but many people are clueless when it comes to how to cook chestnuts. The chestnut is an actual nut that grows in a tree. However, to pick chestnuts takes some effort but once cooked, it would be time well spent. The reason is that on each of the prickly burrs growing on the tree are two to three chestnuts so getting past this protective barrier is challenging. Usually, people will wait to pick chestnuts off the ground, falling upon maturity when the shell is smooth and thinner.

Second, you should never eat a raw chestnut of any variety. The reason is that when raw, chestnuts contain a high level of tannic acid so prior to eating, these nuts have to be roasted or boiled to avoid becoming ill.

That way, they can keep the nuts warm, making them easier to handle.

During this process, the chestnuts should be stirred several times so even cooking occurs. However, chestnuts can be roasted over an open fire by placing them in an aluminum pan and then setting them over hot coals.
